CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

Connecting Indigenous Youth with Culture and Community

Many Indigenous youth in Thunder Bay, Ontario, find themselves far from their home as they pursue their education.

The physical distance from family and community can create a sense of identity loss and isolation, making it difficult to maintain a connection with their cultural roots.

Debbie Esquega has dedicated the past 25 years to serving as a boarding guardian for high school students from outlying communities. Her work has provided a nurturing and supportive environment for young people, offering them the care and guidance they need during their time away from home.

To further support Indigenous youth, Debbie Esquega is leading a new program to help connect youth with culture and community. The program brings together Indigenous youth and Elders, to pass down traditional knowledge and build a stronger sense of dignity, self-esteem, and belonging. Through a series of workshops and sessions, the program will focus on traditional crafts and other activities that foster cultural exploration in a safe environment.

Funding from the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) will support program expenses, including movie nights, art supplies, board games, and venue rentals. These resources will create a space where Indigenous youth can engage with their culture and gain insights from the storytelling and knowledge of Elders. Additionally, the program provides an opportunity for participants to explore their talents and creativity through painting, art, and digital programming.

By creating a space for Indigenous youth to connect with their culture and build meaningful relationships, this project will help participants navigate the challenges of being away from home and at the same time, contribute to the continuity and vibrancy of Indigenous culture for generations to come.
