HEALING AND RECONCILIATION FOR COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES

Out On The Land: St. Louis Métis Cultural and Land-Based Teachings

St. Louis, a Métis community in Saskatchewan, faces many challenges as the result of colonization and intergenerational trauma – from mental health issues and substance abuse to social issues such as domestic violence and suicide.

To foster healing, St. Louis Métis Local, representing over 600 Métis citizens, is launching “Out On The Land,” a program that will reconnect community members with their cultural roots and the natural environment.

“Out On The Land” is looking to bring together Elders and youth by facilitating meaningful interactions around Métis cultural teachings and land-based activities. Throughout the summer of 2024, Métis youth and their families will engage in activities such as hiking, tenting, foraging, and drum-making under the guidance of Elders and Knowledge Keepers. These activities are designed to share Traditional Knowledge and instill a sense of spirituality and belonging among participants.

The initiative is supported by a grant from the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF). Funding will cover essential expenses including honorariums for participating Elders and Knowledge Keepers, venue rentals, workshop materials, food and beverages, and travel costs.

“Out On The Land” embodies the fundamental values of Métis heritage—respect for the land, intergenerational learning, and empowerment of youth. By strengthening connections between community members and their cultural identity, the program looks to break cycles of trauma and empower individuals to forge positive pathways forward through reconciliation.
