Culture and Language Revitalization

Strengthening Oneida Nation Through Culturally Grounded Communication

For generations, the Oneida Nation of the Thames (ONOTT) has relied on oral history as the primary means of communication. However, colonization deeply impacted their language, culture and ceremonies.

During the pandemic, efforts to reclaim language and cultural practices were undermined by restrictions on gatherings. Elders and community members who often lack access to social media were particularly affected by the inability to connect in traditional ways. The loss of these cultural norms exacerbated feelings of isolation and traumatization.

In response, ONOTT recognized the need for a comprehensive communications plan that integrates culture, healing, reconciliation and youth engagement and revitalizes cultural communication methods, particularly storytelling, while adapting to modern needs.

Funding for the project provided through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund will not only help rebuild community ties, but also empower the community to navigate ongoing pandemic restrictions with resilience and solidarity. It will enable the ONOTT to rebuild community cohesion through meaningful, culturally rooted communication. This aligns with the Catholic teachings of human dignity and life, focusing on the well-being of community members.
