Education and Community Building
Reconciling With the Spirit

In ways not seen since before colonialization, Indigenous Peoples are making sweeping changes, creating new opportunities and building unprecedented hope for the future.
They are regaining control of their communities, their spirits and taking charge of their own economic development. This is being led by Elders and Knowledge Keepers determined to pass down their traditional wisdom to the youth and guide their communities.
Older Indigenous Peoples who safeguarded their cultural practices and ancestral teachings are ready to pass them along. In Manitoba, Sandy Bay First Nation is on the cusp of a cultural revolution as more and more young adults seek ways to reconnect with their roots and understand ceremonies and age-old practices. To ensure every opportunity is available for these future leaders, the Sandy Bay Council of Elders created the three-part Sandy Bay Elders Guadalupe Reconciliation Spirit Project, educating youth on the seven grandfather teachings, traditions and ceremonies.
Now in the second year and phase of the project, the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing funding to help take this cultural renewal to the next level. Funding will support workshops, authentic gatherings and teaching opportunities. After the remarkable success of the first phase of the project, the Sandy Bay Elders Guadalupe Reconciliation Spirit Project is set to continue making waves in the community.
Located on Treaty 1 territory, Sandy Bay First Nation has recently seen a population boom with registered Nation members growing to more than three thousand. In response, the Elder’s Circle is acting independent of their roles as teachers in order to share cultural guidance that will have incredible impacts long term.
