Colouring Outside the Margins

Indigenous Peoples have played essential roles in shaping communities through leadership, cultural knowledge, service, education, and advocacy.

However, many of these contributions are not documented, leading to important stories remaining largely unrecognized outside of the communities in which they originated, and at risk of being lost to time.

The Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective in Saskatchewan is looking to celebrate those whose leadership, service, creativity, advocacy, or cultural knowledge has strengthened their communities. They’re inviting members across Prince Albert to nominate Indigenous Peoples who have positively impacted the region. Participants will be encouraged to share photographs, stories, and memories that highlight each individual’s contributions. From these, approximately 30 individuals will be selected to be featured in a thoughtfully designed colouring book. Each page will include a black-and-white illustrated portrait accompanied by a short narrative describing the person’s life, achievements, and impact. The colouring book format creates an educational resource that encourages engagement, particularly among youth. By introducing readers to local Indigenous role models and histories that may otherwise go untold, the book will be a physical manifestation of their achievements and experiences, and their stories will be passed on to future generations.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is proud to contribute funding to support the development and distribution of this educational resource. The finished colouring book will serve as a lasting tool that can be shared in schools, churches, community organizations, and cultural events across the region. The project fosters pride within Indigenous communities while helping non-Indigenous audiences develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the people who have shaped theirs. Indigenous perspectives and knowledge must be woven into the fabric of the nation and become visible to all backgrounds.
