Métis identity is nuanced and can be difficult to understand in the complex space of Indigeneity.

Impacted by colonization and the residential school system, critical cultural knowledge, traditional skills, and community connections have been lost across generations. Métis peoples are often left behind in the push to revitalize First Nation cultures.

As many seek to reconnect with their identity in meaningful and accessible ways, a new program launched by the Northern Prairie Indigenous Peoples Collective Inc., introduces a cultural initiative to support Métis leadership, revitalize cultural expertise, and encourage intergenerational knowledge sharing in a safe environment. Wrapped in a Blanket: A Holistic Experience, is a six-part project where participants will learn traditional activities guided by Métis knowledge keepers, artists, and Elders. It will cover a range of topics important to the Métis identity, including: a workshop where participants will create a traditional Métis capote jacket while exploring its historical and cultural significance; medicine wheel classes exploring its sacred teachings and gaining insight into the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of wellbeing; peyote tubular stitch beading classes; shawl making classes; children and youth art workshops inspired by Indigenous artists with themes of reconciliation; and moccasin making sessions. Through hands-on learning, participants will explore the historical significance of Métis clothing, identity, and life on the prairies. 

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is proud to contribute funding to Wrapped in a Blanket: A Holistic Experience. This project helps preserve Métis artistic practices, strengthens intergenerational learning, and fosters pride in Métis identity and heritage. Participants will leave with new skills, stronger cultural connections, and a deeper appreciation of the traditions, teachings, and resilience that continue to shape Métis communities today.
