Returning for our Rendezvous
Indigenous communities across Canada are bringing back ceremonies that have almost been lost due to colonization.
One such gathering, the Métis Rendezvous, is one of the most important events for Métis to reconnect and engage with traditional activities and demonstrations that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Métis Nation. Colonial policies often forced Métis people to hide in plain sight, leaving many to feel disconnected from their heritage. As Métis communities reclaim their inherent right to exist, revitalizing traditional gatherings such as the Rendezvous plays an important part in that journey.
In Ontario, the Thames Bluewater Métis Council (TBWMC) are proud to have hosted the annual Rendezvous since 2022. Each year, families and friends gather to participate in workshops, take part in entertainment, eat traditional food, and join in knowledge sharing. This includes Michif language learning, beading, finger weaving, fiddling, tin smithing, and participating in a Sacred Fire. As the Rendezvous is set to return for another year, Métis and non-Métis peoples are excited to gather once again for an intergenerational exchange of knowledge. Elders and Knowledge Keepers will be in attendance to create unique opportunities for cultural learning and to help community members reconnect with practices that have been disrupted or lost.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing support for the Rendezvous to ensure the gathering can continue uninhibited for another year. Funding will be allocated to costs associated with food, location, honorarium, supplies and materials as the event itself is organized entirely by volunteers from the TBWMC. By bringing people together to celebrate Métis identity and traditions, the Rendezvous represents reconciliation in action.
