HEALING AND RECONCILIATION FOR COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES

Healing for All

The impacts of colonization and the residential school system have left many Indigenous Peoples in need of healing.

Yet, systemic systems of oppression have left many without access to critical mental health services, leading to higher rates of addiction, suicide, family instability and violence.

Easily accessible programs grounded in Indigenous traditions, ceremony, and community are critical to helping individuals heal from addiction, while also contributing to reconciliation by breaking the cycle of trauma that can be passed on to future generations

Recognizing this gap, Simon House, a residential addiction treatment facility in Alberta, established its First Nations Program in 2020 to help guide and empower individuals to achieve long-term recovery from addiction. The program has grown so rapidly that Indigenous Peoples account for more than 25% of residents seeking care. Residents receive one-on-one counselling and have opportunities to participate in daily smudging, meditation, Wellbriety, sharing circles, traditional medicine teachings, sweats, pow wows, Indigenous arts and crafts, and cultural events led by Elders. The First Nations Program provides education on Indigenous history, culture, treaty relationships, and cultural sensitivity, helping to break down stereotypes, strengthen understanding, and build friendships among Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents. These supports enrich participants’ recovery while addressing the impacts of addiction, trauma, and mental health through First Nations traditions and practices.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is proud to help expand this vital initiative to reach more patients and ensure important cultural aspects can continue to run. Simon House has demonstrated its wholehearted commitment to respecting Indigenous traditions and ensuring Indigenous clients are valued and fully supported throughout their recovery. This holistic approach has helped Simon House’s First Nation Program transform the lives of those who have received treatment, contributing to reconciliation and hope for future generations.
