CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

A Shared Voice

The Métis people are a unique Indigenous group formed from a blend of cultures, traditions and heritages. Their spoken language, Michif, is as equally distinct as its peoples.

However, like many hundreds of other Indigenous languages, it is at risk of being lost – taking with it a vital connection to identity, history and culture. That is why Michif is being added to the national push for revitalization within communities, with younger generations acting as key pillars in its preservation.

Answering this call is the Central Urban Métis Federation Inc. (CUMFI) who are proud to host the fourth annual Michif Language Camp, providing a space for intergenerational learning, cultural exchange and deep community connection. What began as a small initiative has grown each year, welcoming participants from across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.

This vibrant, intergenerational gathering is breathing new life into Northern and Heritage Michif, weaving cultural activities into language instruction to create an experience where traditions are lived, not just learned. Guided by passionate Elders, Knowledge Keepers and educators, the Michif Language Camp is a celebration of Métis identity and a meaningful effort to reclaim the Métis voice.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) will support CUMFI in meeting rising costs associated with the growing number of participants, ensuring all those who wish to join are able to. With this support, CUMFI can continue to deliver impactful programming that uplifts the Michif language, connects generations and builds a stronger, more resilient culture.
