Dialogues for Promoting Indigenous Spirituality and Culture

Access for All

Spiritual well-being for Indigenous Peoples is deeply rooted in the land and community connections. Yet, healthcare spaces often lack dedicated areas to support cultural and spiritual practices such as smudging and access to traditional foods and medicines.

This is another barrier for Indigenous Peoples seeking healthcare who may already be wary of colonial systems that have historically been unwelcoming or biased towards them. Carving out dedicated indoor spaces for gathering is important for the dignity and recognition of Indigenous culture, and an essential step in providing culturally safe, inclusive, and respectful care for all.

Bringing Indigenous voices to the table is transforming healthcare and St. Joseph’s Health Centre (SJHC) in Guelph is leading the way by introducing a dedicated Indigenous Health Sacred Space. Developed with the guidance of a local Indigenous Advisory Council, the space is the first of its kind in Guelph and will be located within a prominent area of SJHC. It will reflect Indigenous cultural and spiritual practices by offering smudging, a dedicated kitchen for the sole use of preparing traditional food and medicines, and access to a garden that includes sacred plants.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is honoured to help SJHC spearhead change within healthcare. For patients and their families, the Indigenous Health Sacred Space will offer comfort, dignity, and connection by supporting the spirit alongside the body and mind. The IRF’s funding will help make this place a reality. This is a meaningful and necessary step in SJHC’s journey toward truth and reconciliation,  demonstrating how care can and should be inclusive for all.
