Ceremony of Ceremonies
Many Indigenous Peoples face emotional, spiritual, and physical disconnect from their culture, the land and their communities.
Colonization and the residential school system deliberately implemented policies aimed at cultural erasure, leading to generations of traumatized Indigenous individuals and families. This negative impact has created a deep need for culturally grounded healing spaces and access to ceremony to foster reconnection and purposeful identity.
Renewing sacred practices is one way to rekindle a sense of belonging and strengthening connections to self, community and land. Known as the “Ceremony of Ceremonies,” the ancient Sundance Ceremony is rooted in healing and connection, bringing together people from communities across Canada who help organize and facilitate the ceremony from a grassroots level. The incredible impact of this ceremony has been seen first-hand in Henvey Inlet First Nation, who have hosted the annual RattleChild Sundance Ceremony since 2013. As the 2026 gathering approaches, Indigenous Peoples of all ages, backgrounds, and Nations will come together from across Labrador, Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba for four days to strengthen kinship ties, renew relationships, and build new connections. All participants in the Sundance will lend their strength to build the pinnacle Sundance Lodge, with past attendees sharing their knowledge with newcomers.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing funding to support this ceremonial gathering as attendance and subsequent costs have significantly increased in recent years. The IRF’s support will help ensure that this culturally safe space remains accessible. Through participation, individuals will strengthen their sense of identity, belonging, and pride, while carrying these teachings and positive impacts back to their families and communities, contributing to long-term healing and cultural continuity.
