A Deeper Understanding
Sacred gatherings have been used for countless generations in Indigenous cultures. These ceremonies mark important social, cultural and spiritual events and vary from Nation-to-Nation.
The Mawio’mi, a gathering of the Mi’kmaq people residing in Atlantic Canada, brings people together to strengthen connections through storytelling, traditional dance and music, and the sharing of teachings by Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Today, they are an important part of fostering understanding and education between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, mending bridges, building relationships, and driving reconciliation efforts forward.
In 2022, Atlantic Canada’s first Truth and Reconciliation Committee was formed through the All Saints Parish and has since been working hard to create opportunities that focus on sharing Indigenous culture and fostering reconciliation. This year, the committee is partnering with Indigenous Services Canada (Atlantic Region) and the Town of Amherst to host a traditional Mawio’mi during National Indigenous History Month. Open to all, the gathering will celebrate Mi’kmaq culture through traditional songs, drumming, dancing, storytelling, and cultural teachings. These gatherings have become important learning opportunities within Amherst.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is honoured to contribute to this event that was cancelled in 2025 due to lack of funding. As a gathering dedicated to sharing knowledge, celebrating culture, and encouraging Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to walk together on the path of reconciliation, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of Mi’kmaq traditions while strengthening the connections that are essential to meaningful and lasting reconciliation.
