Culture and Language Revitalization
Voices Carried

Meaningful connections between the youngest and the oldest within Indigenous communities has been the beating heart of how culture and language is shared. Colonization has frayed these bonds and led to a generational divide between Indigenous Peoples, increasing the risk of losing integral cultural knowledge.
Following community engagement and conversations with organizations, Indigenous Peoples have identified gaps in programming that bring together Indigenous youth with Elders, settlers, and newcomers through storytelling.
Out of these conversations, the Voices Carried program was born. Between 10 to 20 young Indigenous Peoples from across Saskatoon will participate in bi-weekly workshops with Elders and settlers. Participants will gather to share stories, lived experiences, and cultural knowledge in a respectful environment. The program will use oral tradition to preserve knowledge, strengthen identity, and build understanding across generations and cultures. Youth will learn about traditions and histories while developing their own storytelling and communication skills through guided programming centred on listening, reflection, mentorship, and creative expression. The program will conclude with a special holiday storytelling event where participants share what they have learned, celebrate the relationships formed, and recognize the contributions of each individual and their mentors.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is excited to contribute funding to support Voices Carried, delivered by the Saskatoon Council on Aging (SCOA). This support will ensure the program has the space and materials it needs to ensure success. SCOA recognizes the importance of relationships between Elders and youth through its non-profit work. By bringing different generations and cultures together, Voices Carried will foster greater understanding, empathy, and stronger community relationships, with the longer-term goal of building youth confidence and advocating for themselves and their culture.
