Culture and Language Revitalization
Moose Camp

Many young Indigenous Peoples remain disconnected from their traditional practices. Educational opportunities for these skills are often in classroom settings, lacking connection to Indigenous ways of knowing, such as land-based teachings or through Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
As Elders age, there is a critical need to preserve their knowledge by bringing them together with youth to share their wisdom. Without these educational gatherings, traditional skills and cultural teachings risk being lost.
The St. Kateri Church in Thunder Bay is launching Moose Camp, bringing together Indigenous youth and Elders alongside experienced traditional instructor A.J. King. Young Indigenous Peoples will learn traditional moose camp practices such as respectful harvesting of materials, how to safely use tools, traditional and effective camp setup, fire building, meat preparation, hide care and outdoor safety. Alongside these practical skills, Elders will share stories, teachings, values, and cultural protocols that have guided Indigenous families for generations. Learning on the land will help youth strengthen their cultural identity while learning about respect for Creation, gratitude to the Creator, generosity, and their responsibility to carry traditional knowledge forward.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is contributing funding to support the continuation of Moose Camp. Traditional Moose Camps have been offered successfully for many years and continue to receive strong support from youth, families, and community members. Participants value the opportunity to learn directly from Elders and experienced instructors in an outdoor setting, with many youth returning to continue developing their skills and deepen their understanding of Indigenous traditions. With the IRF’s support, Moose Camp will help ensure these teachings continue to be shared with future generations while strengthening community connections rooted in land, culture, faith, and respect.
