CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION
Our Way of Being

There are over 70 distinct spoken Indigenous languages within Canada and preservation of these sacred dialects has never been more important.
As the number of fluent Indigenous language speakers decline, with historic efforts to erase these languages taking their toll, now is a critical time to revitalize languages before they’re gone forever.
Learning language and traditional gathering is key to achieving community connection. The Hamilton Regional Indian Centre (HRIC) currently offers limited language classes and other programs to create a safe place, encourage new relationships between Indigenous Peoples and build support systems, all through language classes and gathering circles. Laughter, sharing stories, open discussion and learning traditional teachings helps inspire a powerful feeling of belonging. The HRIC has witnessed the influence of their offerings from participants who join one program only to register for many more, ultimately becoming pillars of cultural empowerment themselves.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing funding to make sure these classes and programs are no longer limited. Funds will go towards weekly beginner Mohawk and Ojibwe language classes and advanced level Mohawk language classes, as well as traditional gatherings and cultural programs. The funds will be critical to offset costs, meet program needs and create sustainable language resources and opportunities for Indigenous Peoples.
The HRIC’s experience and standing in the region positions it as a leader in this field. The HRIC has fully demonstrated its ability to inspire and empower community through previous programs and events that have sparked passion, excitement, and have strengthened Indigenous language reclamation and revitalization.
