CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION
Restoring Rendezvous

Gathering is a sacred practice in Indigenous cultures. It is a time of traditional renewal, community connection, knowledge sharing, and celebration.
However, due to the impacts of colonization, it is increasingly difficult in modern Métis life for community members to gather. The Métis have often been considered the forgotten people, their unique culture misrepresented and misunderstood. This has led to the sacred practice of “Rendezvous” to be stifled. As sacred knowledge faces erasure, there is a call for Métis to restore cultural traditions and to reclaim their identity and inherent right to be recognized and self-governing.
Métis citizens from across the South West Region of the Métis Nation of Ontario, including communities from Windsor, Goderich, Stratford, Cambridge, Hamilton, and Niagara, are coming together to revitalize practices through the Regional Rendezvous. Held annually on the date of the Supreme Court of Canada’s landmark decision that clarified Métis are a distinct people, separate from First Nations and Inuit peoples, the Rendezvous celebrates unique Métis culture and community connection. It gathers Métis artisans, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members for a large-scale cultural gathering focused on education, celebration, and the restoration of Métis heritage. Activities will reflect traditional Rendezvous practices, including skills, teachings, and opportunities for intergenerational learning and connection.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing funding to ensure this important cultural gathering can continue running annually. The strong movement across Métis communities to revitalize traditions has led to increased interest, and the IRF’s contribution will be part of a larger story about rebuilding community connections, restoring cultural practices, and fostering pride and belonging among Métis citizens.
