Culture and Language Revitalization
Ribbon Skirts, Ribbon Shirts, and Bags
There is a sacred bond between young Indigenous Peoples and community Elders that is integral to passing on traditional knowledge, practices and history. Due to the impacts of colonization, these bonds have frayed over generations.

Today, efforts are being made for Indigenous Peoples to rekindle these connections and preserve traditional cultural values, teachings, protocols, and practical skills. Programs that help restore cultural traditions while creating meaningful social connections will strengthen community bonds and foster a sense of identity, helping to heal the damage done in the past.
One such initiative at St. Kateri Church in Thunder Bay is the Ribbon Shirt and Ribbon Skirt Program. Sewing and storytelling are pathways that Indigenous Peoples have always used to hand down knowledge and skills. The program brings together Indigenous participants to learn practical sewing skills rooted in identity, tradition, and community. It is guided by Elders and a dedicated team of volunteer sewers and community members who provide hands-on support throughout the sessions. After prior successful runs, the program continues to grow, with participants proudly displaying their creations during church celebrations, community gatherings, and cultural events.
In response to the request to continue hosting these workshops, the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is contributing funding to ensure the Ribbon Shirt and Ribbon Skirt Program can continue serving Indigenous Peoples and the community. Through participation, individuals can experience a renewed sense of identity and healing, while building stronger relationships within the community and strengthening connections with the Church.
