CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

The Site of the Bells

For nearly two centuries, St. Laurent in Manitoba has woven the foundation of its identity together through Catholic faith and Métis heritage.

This community, long established in the region, is sacred to its people. However, like many communities today, its traditional stories, teachings and spaces where people have gathered for prayer and cultural expression, are at risk of fading. Without preservation these ties risk being weakened, further disconnecting Métis youth from their heritage.

To revitalize their history and encourage pride in their traditions, the people of St. Laurent are looking to restore their sacred grotto, initially built in 1947 as a place of prayer, gathering and cultural celebration. The community is seeking to breathe new life back into the site in time for its 80th anniversary in 2027. The Mession a l’omb’ dju clochi (Mission in the Shadow of the Bells) project seeks to revitalize the site, create opportunities for cultural understanding, and engage Métis youth in learning with Elders. Guided by the parish committee and supported by long-standing community volunteers, the restoration will ensure the grotto remains a place where families and communities can gather in pilgrimage, cultural sharing and education.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is honoured to help safeguard this important religious and cultural landmark. The grotto is a living legacy of Métis pride, resilience and reconciliation that will continue to be a place of peace, healing and renewal for all who visit.
