HEALING AND RECONCILIATION FOR COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES
Threads of Story
Spiritual and physical healing is a process steeped in sacred cultural practices, dependent on personal individuality, and varies depending on one’s experiences.

For Indigenous Peoples, intergenerational trauma has caused deep wounds, leaving many struggling to manage their wellbeing.
There is a need for culturally supportive initiatives to help Indigenous Peoples feel safe to open up and heal, whether through sharing personal stories or simply learning that they are not alone in their feelings.
To reduce stigmas around the challenges Indigenous Peoples face, the Battlefords Urban Indigenous Society is introducing its first big project, Threads of Story. Over a six-month period, this culturally grounded reconciliation initiative will bring together 40 to 60 First Nations, Métis, and Non-Status youth and adults for guided dialogue, storytelling, beadwork, and writing. Participants will learn traditional and contemporary practices while taking part in healing writing sessions that explore Indigenous spirituality, identity, and lived experiences. Their stories and beadwork will be documented and compiled into a professionally produced book that reflects personal journeys, cultural resilience, and shared understanding.
Guided by Elders and Knowledge Keepers, Threads of Story will give a public platform for Indigenous voices to be heard in their own words. The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is contributing funding to ensure participants can focus on healing and giving voice to their experiences while supporting others along their journeys. The IRF’s contribution will help produce the book, ensuring it becomes a lasting educational resource that promotes understanding of Indigenous spirituality and culture, encourages meaningful dialogue around reconciliation, and preserves participants’ stories for future generations.
