Education and Community Building
Through the Stained Glass

Indigenous worldviews, ways of knowing, and traditions have always been expressed through art, embedded in the foundations of stone, wood, hides, clay and beads.
For generations, Indigenous artists have been the safekeepers of sacred traditions during times when systems of oppression have tried to erase them. Today, Indigenous art is being recognized for its importance and beauty, with an increasing demand for it to be featured in public spaces. Bringing Indigenous art into the public realm where it can be seen, shared, and engaged with encourages questions and facilitates understanding, connection, and inclusion.
As Catholic institutions look to heal historic wrongs and rebuild bridges with Indigenous communities, they are seeking to incorporate visible and tangible aspects of Indigenous culture within churches across Canada. The Three Sisters Artist Collective; Claire Brascoupe, Emily Brascoupe-Hoefler, and Mairi Brascoupe are at the forefront of this initiative and are creating a large-scale exterior mural on the parish centre of Canadian Martyrs Church in Ottawa. Approximately 8 feet wide by 11 feet high, the mural will be installed on a highly visible east-facing wall along Main Street, making it accessible to parishioners, students, and staff at Immaculata High School and the broader community. As Algonquin artists from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, the Three Sisters Artist Collective envision work honouring the original stewards of the land and seek to create art that evokes the resilience and beauty of Indigenous presence.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is proud to contribute funding to a project that invites ongoing reflection and relationship-building between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. The IRF’s support will help cover costs associated with the mural’s creation, such as the purchase of weather-resistant paints suitable for Ottawa’s climate, to optimize longevity and vibrancy. The mural is a gesture of peace and partnership and will strengthen cross-cultural connections to advance healing, understanding, and reconciliation in meaningful and lasting ways.
