CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

Beyond the Thread

Stitch by stitch, bead by bead, and thread by thread, Indigenous Peoples are reclaiming their culture across Canada.

There has been a resurgence of interest in Indigenous practices and a strong drive to revitalize traditional crafts and teachings that have survived, despite the odds, over the years. From youth to seniors, many are seeking educational opportunities to reconnect with their roots.

To meet this demand and help instill Indigenous Pride in communities, cultural workshops are being organized across Canada to teach traditional skills. Sewing, beading and making regalia and traditional clothing that celebrate Indigenous identity and culture are among the workshop activities.

The Sacred Heart Parish in Edmonton has opened its doors to First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples to offer sewing, beading and craft classes to make star blankets and skirts. These classes are more than a workshop, they are a place where traditional teachings are shared and will be carried forward by Indigenous Peoples in the future.

The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) will cover supplies for workshops in 2025 and will ensure that knowledge keepers are in attendance to share their wisdom and guide participants. To date, the Sacred Heart Parish has covered the supplies and tools for 15 participants.

To continue honouring Indigenous traditions, the star blankets created by previous workshop participants have been gifted to special individuals as a heartfelt thank you. These gifts of honour have typically gone to people who have dedicated years of service and contributed their support to the Sacred Heart Church.
