Education and Community Building

Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation Cultural Centre

Culture is about community, and building a sense of connection comes from sharing traditions, activities, and heritage in meaningful ways.

To bring these opportunities to Indigenous and non-Indigenous People in the region, Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation in Ontario is partnering with the Town of Renfrew to establish the Bonnechere Algonquin First Nation Cultural Centre (BAFNCC) as an expansion of the Ma-Te-Way Activity Centre.

The Centre already offers athletic programs tailored for Indigenous athletes, as well as training for coaches, trainers, and sports officials that incorporates cultural relevance. The BAFNCC will expand programming to include educational activities focused on reconciliation and cultural revitalization. Elders will play a key role in these new programs, sharing their knowledge of traditional practices, medicines, foods, and crafts, ensuring that these teachings are passed on to future generations.

Thanks to funding from the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF), BAFNCC will be able to cover 50% of its 2024 programming budget. The grant will be used to develop curriculum-focused programs and learning resources, with a special focus on the history and legacy of residential schools. The goal is to foster cultural appreciation, promote reconciliation, and empower both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities through education.

BAFNCC aims to fill a gap in the region by providing a welcoming space where people can come together to share in culture, education, entertainment, and community-building.
