HEALING AND RECONCILIATION FOR COMMUNITIES AND FAMILIES

Indigenous Ministries Build Bridges for Healing and Reconciliation

To address historical wrongs, rebuild trust, and foster lasting relationships, Catholic ministries across Canada are working toward reconciliation by bringing together Indigenous culture and the Catholic faith.

This commitment has led to the creation of Indigenous ministries within dioceses nationwide, where cultural programs support healing and deepen connections between communities.

The Indigenous Ministry of Thunder Bay has been a leader in this work, engaging with local communities and collaborating with Indigenous organizations to create programs dedicated to reconciliation. They gather regularly in traditional ways and have partnered with groups such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, fulfilling Call to Action 94 by hosting a bi-weekly Holy Hour to honour missing and murdered Indigenous children. Working with the Anemki-wadj Spiritual Centre, St. Anne’s Church, Kateri Church, and Gull Bay, the Ministry has hosted faith-based and cultural events, including listening circles, an Elders’ Council, and community gatherings.

These programs are essential for supporting Indigenous Peoples within the Church and surrounding communities. To ensure these efforts can continue, the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is funding a part-time volunteer position from January to December. This role will provide day-to-day support and act as a liaison with Indigenous communities throughout the Thunder Bay Diocese.

Over the past two years, the Indigenous Ministry of Thunder Bay has become a trusted community hub for Indigenous Peoples. It regularly holds listening and healing circles for residential and day school Survivors, provides resources to encourage faith and healing, and offers guidance for those seeking support. With an Elders’ Council that advises the Bishop directly, the Ministry is helping to create a space where Indigenous culture and faith come together in a spirit of understanding and reconciliation.
