CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION
The Social Event of the Season

The Métis have made their mark on this land through their rich history, vibrant traditions, and colourful heritage. In 2003, the Supreme Court of Canada officially acknowledged Métis as one of three distinct Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
While this decision bolstered pride in individuals’ identity, it failed to revitalize traditions that were lost to colonization. One such practice was “Rendezvous.” Considered one of the biggest social engagements, Rendezvous gatherings were forced underground for generations, and as Canada reconciles with its history, there is a movement to bring this sacred event back into the light.
Always held in the fall as a season for renewal, Rendezvous are integral in rebuilding pride and supporting individuals in affirming their inherent right to be recognized and self-governing. Métis citizens from across the South West Region of the Métis Nation of Ontario, including communities from Windsor, Goderich, Stratford, Cambridge, Hamilton, and Niagara, came together last year to introduce Restoring Rendezvous. This new, annual gathering brings together a large number of Métis peoples to educate and reinforce their shared heritage and pride. Activities reflect traditional Rendezvous practices, including skills, teachings, and opportunities for intergenerational learning and connection. Métis artisans, Knowledge Keepers, Elders, performers, and more, attend to make this event one of the largest in the southwest region of Ontario.
As the Rendezvous prepares for its second year, the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF) is providing funding to help the gathering cover all costs associated with a growing event. The IRF’s contribution will be part of a larger story about rebuilding community connections, restoring cultural practices, and fostering pride and belonging among Métis citizens who are reclaiming their inherent right to exist, be heard, and be self-governing.
