CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

Michif Language Revitalization Circle Community Outreach (2024)

For many Métis people, discovering their cultural heritage has been a journey of revelation and rediscovery.

Métis youth are seldom exposed to Michif language and culture, as older generations grapple with a legacy of shame surrounding their identity. Organizations like the Michif Language Revitalization Circle (MLRC) are working to mend these connections and reclaim Métis heritage.

The MLRC offers a platform for cultural reconnection and community building for Métis people of all ages. Through language revitalization programs and educational initiatives, the MLRC helps bridge the gap between youth, adults, and elders in Métis communities.

With the help of funding from the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF), the MLRC is expanding its reach to promote Métis language and culture. A grant from the IRF will cover expenses for information booths at public events on Vancouver Island, including National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, providing an opportunity for MLRC to spread awareness about its language programs and the SpeakMichif.ca website.

In addition, funding will provide custom Métis orange shirts to Métis children, Youth, students, staff and volunteers.

The MLRC recognizes that the journey of rediscovery is deeply personal and spiritual for each participant. By fostering a supportive community of Michif language learners, both in-person and digitally, the MLRC empowers individuals to embrace their heritage and carry forward the legacy of Métis language and culture.
