CULTURE AND LANGUAGE REVITALIZATION

Ticmup Cultural and Education Centre Project

Ticmup, a non-profit society founded in January 2021, is dedicated to preserving and promoting Nuu-chah-nulth family cultural teachings, language, and art through collaborative efforts with Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies.

In 2023, Ticmup’s cultural building found a permanent home on the ancestral territories of the Hupacasath Nations in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Presently, Ticmup’s focus lies on completing the structural elements of the building, including a deck and covered area for cultural gatherings, performances, and community events.

Volunteers have generously contributed their time and labour to the construction process. Thanks to a grant from the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (IRF), Ticmup will now be able to acquire all necessary building materials, from siding and flooring to insulation, doors, windows, and other construction essentials.

Founded by Tim Paul (Hesquiaht), Archie Little (Nuchatlaht), Paul Amos (Hesquiaht), and Dawn Smith (Ehattesaht), Ticmup aspires to expand its reach in the future. Plans include the establishment of a cultural library to house gathered Nuu-chah-nulth knowledge, fostering broader access to Indigenous heritage for both Nuu-chah-nulth communities and the public.
